Damage to Gantry Crane No 1
Port of Bangkok, Thailand
On 14 January 1991 the ship mv Great Promise entered the Port of Klong Toey, Bangkok.  Whilst navigating the river channel the ship collided with the Port of Thailand Authority’s East Quay Wharf and with gantry container crane No 1.

The impact caused severe damage to 22 metres of the wharf cope face and fenders, broke nine wharf deck support piles, severed wharf services and caused the total collapse of gantry container crane No 1.  In its collapse, crane No 1 in turn damaged gantry container crane No 2, destroyed several containers and damaged box trailers.

SMC was retained by ship insurers to:
  • inspect the damage caused to the cranes and wharf facilities,
  • review proposed methods of repair and assess their appropriateness,
  • estimate the cost of the repairs and consequential losses incurred by the Port Authority,
  • assist the client in discussions with the Port Authority
