CoCo III, Coal Import Berth
Map Ta Phut Industrial Port, Rayong, Thailand
Thai Cogeneration Co Ltd owns and operates the COCO Phase III power plant at Map Ta Phut Port.  Coal feedstock for the power plant is imported through a berth and transferred by conveyors to the coal stockpile inside the plant.

SMC were initially commissioned by CoCo to carry out preliminary and detailed design for the dredging, ship berth and coal transfer system (partly above ground and partly underground / undersea). Following some changes in project policy, SMC were later commissioned by ITD to design in detail the coal import berth and coal conveyor support trestle foundations.  M&E works for the conveyors were designed and supplied by Koch of Germany.

After some years, SMC were again appointed for revising the coal handling system on the berth to incorporate multiple hoppers to suit conventional bulk carriers with on-board cranes as well as the original self-discharging carriers. SMC conducted the design, prepared tender documentation and undertook tender processing.

The berth can accommodate vessels up to 60,000dwt and the coal handling system was designed to suit self-unloading vessels discharging coal via a single hopper at up to 2,800 t/hr.
