Laemchabang Port Terminal A2 was developed as a container and general cargo terminal. SMC / Maunsell was appointed to undertake the detailed design and documentation of the complete terminal works for this 17-hectare green-field site.

Terminal works include a 400m long wharf for Panamax size vessels, container and general cargo stacking areas, pavements, RTG (rubber tyred gantry) runways, container plinths, drainage, buildings, lighting, access roads, water supply and power reticulation.

The buildings include a four-storey administration and operations block, container freight station, maintenance workshop, gatehouse and sub-station. The scope of consultancy services included the letting of contracts for preliminary earthworks, pile supply and terminal works.

Prior to commencement of the main terminal works, SMC / Maunsell undertook the contract administration and site supervision of a preliminary earthworks contract for the removal of a silt pond contained within the terminal site which had been formed during reclamation works at the inception of Laemchabang Port in 1988. This required the disposal and replacement of 600,000cum of silt with suitable granular material.

On completion of the earthworks contract SMC / Maunsell was appointed to administer and supervise the contract for construction of the main terminal works.
