NIRAS had been awarded a contract, funded by the International Development Association, to undertake an integrated approach to flood risk management for 13 districts in Malawi, which had been severely affected by the 2015 floods.
 
Part of the project included the design of 26 flood defences: basic dams and in some instances adjacent land-based berms, strategically located on river networks throughout 11 rural districts.
 
SMC undertook the review of the general arrangement drawings of 16 of these flood protection structures and provided 3D modelling, estimation of quantities and CAD drawings including those for the detail design of spillways and outlets.
