MRTA Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Blue Line - South
Bangkok, Thailand
The South contract of the Bangkok Metropolitan Rapid Transit railway comprises an 11km length of twin tunnels, (as well as sections of cut-and-cover tunnel), nine underground stations, two canal bridges and various other structures.

Initially commissioned to produce a tender design, the SMC / Maunsell led design team produced architectural, civil and electrical / mechanical designs for the stations, the cut-and-cover sections, driven running tunnels, intervention shafts, passenger access tunnels / buildings and ventilation shafts / buildings.

Predominant factors influencing the design were the high groundwater table, the proximity of adjacent buildings and the soft alluvial clays through which the structures had to be excavated.

The design commission was led by SMC with the civil / structural design and geotechnical expertise being provided by the UK and Australian groups of Maunsell.
